Hello,

Has anyone any experience with the folks over at pentjaksilatusa.com/

I have left one voice mail a few weeks ago and recently an e-mail to their organization, but no response from anyone. I am assuming that they are probably very busy.

Might there be a school/someone's garage in the South Bay that anyone could recommend for silat training?

I am in Mountain View, CA. Trained long ago in KunTao Silat and wish to further explore this amazing art and any variations.

Thanks,

Ray

  • Thanks for the replies. I will continue to search for instruction that is close. Santa Cruz is a bit of a drive, but if I really want this I have to keep my options open.

I did find a school in San Francisco www.authenticbeladiri.com that looks promising.

I was contacted by Prof. KnustGraichen of Pentjak Silat USA and he gave me the link to his site and his program.

I have to mull over a distance learning method vs. testing my current skills and improving them with live players.

    Peace,
    Ray
    • I would recomend that if you opt for a distance program that you still get a buddy to train with. Although pentjak silat has a lot of solo forms and excercises that you can practice on your own (djurus and langkahs and such) in my opinion you really need a live partner to get a sense of how the system is applied, to get feedback so you can get a feel for how it all "works."

If you don't know of any friends that would be interested, try asking around at work or school (if you're a student).

      Good luck!
  • Might be a bit of a drive for you, but if its not there is a very good Ba-Gua school near Berkeley that also teaches Petjak Silat Serak.

    • Hey, I'm in Berkeley... can you tell me more about the school? I've been to the website, but it would be cool to hear some personal experiences.
      • I've had the privilege of training with Bernie Langan and he is a great martial artist and a terrific teacher. He is a high ranking senior in Pentjak Silat Serak under Pak Victor de Thouars himself and an amazing practitioner of Ba Gua and other chinese internal systems. He also is a great healer within those arts so anything he break using his Serak he can fix. :)

I recommend him highly and since he is right near you there's no reason to not at least check him out.
        • Awesome. As soon as I have steady income again, I will start classes.

Years ago I studied Yang tai chi, ba gua, and pentjak silat under a student of Willem's on the east coast; are the systems very different? (And maybe I'll sound silly, but is there any "family feuding" I should be aware of?)

I'm especially glad to hear about the healing... I'm at a place in my life where I don't want to study breaking without studying fixing too, just for my own mental and emotional balance.
  • I highly recommend Guru Rennie Saunders of Pencak Silat Gerakan Suci.

He can be reached at: sales@artificium.org

    Good luck.
    • Omarr- is he located in or near San Jose? That'd be great!
      • Salaam John,
Thanks for the promo Omar, I'm blushing...
I am now conducting classes both in Santa Cruz (Thursdays and Sundays) and in San Francisco (Saturdays).
I can be reached at renster@got.net. Website: www.gerakansuci.com.

As for Pentjak Silat USA, I have the highest regard for Dr. Andre and his students, however I had heard a rumor that he wasn't accepting students. This is old news so don't take my word, but if he is, by all means you would be hard pressed to find a better practictioner of the art.
        peace and hormat,
        Guru Rennie
        • Thanks for the info! Ya as soon as I have the time, I will get ahold of you and make my way down there. I have a pretty packed schedule right now but I'm scouting out schools :) so that when I DO have more time on my hands I'll know where to go.
          Thanks, ~John.
PS- I'm still hoping that something will pop up closer to home! SC/SF kinda far from the valley!
          • Hi John,

My student Vince is practice leader for a class in Redwood City, if that's a little closer for you.
            Good luck in your search.

            Santa Cruz Silat

P.S. - Hi Guru Rennie! Long time no see!
            • Yea I would love to sit in on a practice session! Get at me with the information, and we'll make arrangements asap!

*FYI- I have been trying to get ahold of Guru Chester (Cal) B. Mellonius of Pentjak Silat Manyang. He has actually been to my house (he is the boyfriend of a friend of a friend) for a party. Problem is, the only site with any information whatsoever is the site of Manyang which is primarily in Dutch. I have his card, BUT his phone # and e-mail are outdated.

ATM still looking for an instructor and/or training partner!

              Peace, ~John.
  • Hi Rayman,

I am also very much interested in finding a school and other information on Silat, Kuntao etc. in the San Jose area. I dont have any experience in the art but know a little bit about it and would definitely like to learn/train with someone who does. Let me know if youve had any luck finding anything locally.

    Thanks,

    Dilshan

  • Silat is a term used by the peoples of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Southern Philippines to define their indigenous methods of fighting.
Silat training approaches the spiritual, psychological and physical dimensions which are one with the course of instruction.
Silat is done by knowing, not by thinking; confirmed by doing, not by rationalizing. It conceptualizes truth, not theories.
Through experience, we discover what to consider, not consider what to discover.
Through truth, consistency and patience we begin to perceive. Then we can distinguish the evident from the hidden, the superficial from the substantial, the circumstantial from the essential of what we think, do, and become.
This is a rare opportunity to experience an art that is still taught from the original perspective. One that remains unchanged and unaffected by contemporary trends and influences.
